World Nomads Travel Insurance
Before we go any further, let’s make it clear that we think having travel insurance is a must. You wouldn’t drive your car without insurance, or have a house without insurance. For a few bucks per day, you shouldn’t travel without insurance either.
Some people may get coverage from their health insurance, or maybe even a credit card. But for those who don’t, or who want to supplement their insurance, let’s take a look at some of the most important aspects of travel insurance.
When traveling with my family, the most important thing I am looking for in travel insurance is access to quality health care.
Since we travel quite frequently to the United States, we need to make sure we have coverage so that a quick trip to the emergency room doesn’t turn into a mortgage payment. Unfortunately, our Brazilian health insurance doesn’t cover us when we travel, so we had to look elsewhere.
We have been using World Nomads for six years mostly because of their excellent health coverage. If and when we need care while traveling, we can simply choose where we want to go (not from some pre-approved list) and send the bill to World Nomads.
Fortunately, we have only had to use our insurance for that reason three times, and each time the claim was processed quickly.
If something more serious happened, they also provide medical evacuation like in cases of serious illness or death.
We all know that traveling can have its hiccups. Missed connection, delayed bags, change of plans? All of these things and more can be covered by a decent travel insurance.
Assuming the airline could not accommodate you, the insurance would step in and compensate you. So you might even make some money on that delayed bag!
If your flight is delayed by more than four hours, World Nomads will reimburse you for your food expenses and accommodation costs! Not bad!
Lost or Stolen Items
We tend to travel heavy. And that includes electronics. Caline and I are constantly on our iPhones, Emily watches Frozen on repeat on her Kindle Fire, and we almost always have a laptop and DSLR camera with us.
It is nice to know that if something were to happen to one of those items, we wouldn’t be out hundreds of dollars.
Do You Really Need Travel Insurance?
YES. Of course we would all want the answer to be no, and hopefully you will never need it. But we can’t predict the future, and we think it is better to be safe than sorry.
I never thought I would throw out my back in New York, or get hit with a brutal virus in Montreal. Caline was glad to be able to be seen ASAP at a top hospital in Boston when she was having breastfeeding issues. Life happens, be prepared.
Although the majority of our trips have been without issue, it comes down to peace of mind. Knowing that no matter where we are in the world, my family’s health will be taken care of is worth any extra cost – and it is often not much.
Why World Nomads Travel Insurance
I encourage everyone to do their due diligence and research travel insurance on their own, however after spending hours doing just that, all signs kept points to World Nomads.
One of the features I like the most about World Nomads travel insurance is the ease of use. Their website is clear, easy to use, and has very straight forward pricing. You know exactly what you are getting and how much it will cost in just a few clicks.
In the case you need to file a claim, that too is a breeze. For each claim that we filed all I had to do was upload the paperwork that we had received from the hospital, provide my bank account number, and then wait a few days for a deposit. Not once did I have to get on the phone to deal with anything- which is a huge plus for me.
We have been using and recommending World Nomads travel insurance since 2010 and will continue to do so until something better comes along.
When it comes to the health of my family, there is really nothing more important.
